Much has been reported in the papers recently concerning the bingo industry being hit as a result of the cigarette ban in the UK. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for big tax breaks to help keep the industry afloat. But can the web version of this classic game provide a escape, or will it never compare to its bricks and mortar opposite?
Bingo has been an enduring game usually enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. In any case the game recently had undergone a recent resurgence in appeal with younger people opting to visit the bingo parlours instead of the clubs on a Saturday night. All this is about to be reversed with the enforcement of the anti cigarette law all over UK.
No more will gamblers be able to smoke while marking numbers. From the summer of ‘07 every public area will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most popular areas where folks enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already prohibited in the bingo parlours. Players have plunged and the business is literally struggling for its life. But where did all the players go? Obviously they have not forgotten this ancient game?
The answer is online. Players realise that they can participate in bingo using their computer while enjoying a drink and cigarette and in the end, have a chance at huge cash rewards. This is a recent development and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on smoking.
Of course gambling on on the internet could never replace the collective part of heading down to the bingo parlour, but for a group of men and women the governing edicts have left many bingo enthusiasts with little choice.
