A lot has been talked in the papers just a while ago concerning the bingo industry being hit as a consequence of the anti smoking law in Britain. Conditions have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested big aid to help keep the industry alive. However does the internet variation of this quintessential game provide a lifeline, or will it not compare to its bricks and mortar kin?
Bingo is an ancient game generally enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. Although the game recently had seen a recent return in acceptance with younger members of society opting to visit the bingo parlors rather than the discos on a Friday night. All this is about to be destroyed with the introduction of the cigarette ban all over Britain.
No longer will gamblers be permitted to smoke whilst dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public place will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most favored places where players like to puff on cigarettes.
The effects of the smoking ban can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already not permitted in the bingo halls. Numbers have plummeted and the business is absolutely struggling for its life. But where did the players go? Surely they have not abandoned this age old game?
The answer is on the web. Gamblers know that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a drink and cig and in the end, enjoy big prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course betting on online is unlikely to replace the social portion of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of men and women the rules have left a number of bingo players with no alternative.
