Can the Smoking Ban in the UK Drive Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Web?

An abundance has been stated in the papers not long ago about the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the cigarette ban in the United Kingdom. Conditions have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for big tax cuts to assist in keeping the businesses afloat. But will the web adaptation of this quintessential game offer a salvation, or will it never compare to its real life equivalent?

Bingo has been an ancient game usually played by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game recently had seen a recent comeback in popularity with younger men and women opting to visit the bingo parlors instead of the clubs on a weekend. This is all about to change with the introduction of the anti smoking law around Britain.

Players will no longer be allowed to smoke while marking numbers. From the summer of ‘07 all public areas will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most common places where people enjoy smoking.

The outcome of the anti smoking law can already be looked at in Scotland where cigarettes are already not permitted in the bingo parlours. Profits have plunged and the industry is literally struggling for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Of course they have not deserted this established game?

The answer is on the internet. People realize that they can wager on bingo from their computer at the same time enjoying a drink and smoke and still enjoy big prizes. This is a recent development and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.

Of course betting on on the internet could never replace the collective aspect of going over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of players the governing edicts have left a good many bingo players with no alternative.
