Might the Anti Smoking Law in Britain Take Bingo Players On to the Internet?

Much has been written in the press just a while ago regarding the bingo industry struggling as a result of the anti smoking law in the UK. Conditions have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for huge aid to assist in keeping the industry alive. But will the net variation of this classic game provide a escape, or will it not compare to its bricks and mortar relative?

Bingo has been an familiar game normally enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. However the game of late had witnessed a recent comeback in popularity with younger people opting to go to the bingo halls in place of the bars on a Friday night. All this is about to change with the enacting of the smoking ban throughout United Kingdom.

Players will no longer be allowed to puff on cigarettes whilst marking numbers. From the summer of ‘07 every public area will no longer be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most common locations where many people like to puff on cigarettes.

The effects of the cigarette ban can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already banned in the bingo halls. Profits have plummeted and the industry is beyond a doubt struggling for its life. But where have the players gone? Surely they haven’t deserted this age old game?

The answer is on the internet. People realise that they can wager on bingo using their computer while enjoying a beer and fag and still have a chance at huge cash rewards. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.

Of course gambling on on the internet is unlikely to replace the collective aspect of heading down to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of men and women the rules have left many bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
