Can the Cigarette Ban in the UK Take Bingo Players On to the Web?

[ English ]

A lot has been written in the papers not long ago regarding the bingo industry being hurt because of the cigarette ban in the United Kingdom. Conditions have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded huge tax breaks to help keep the businesses afloat. However does the internet adaptation of this classic game provide a reprieve, or might it in no way compare to its real life kin?

Bingo is an classic game normally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had witnessed a recent increase in acceptance with younger people deciding to visit the bingo parlors rather than the clubs on a Saturday night. All this is about to be reversed with the enforcement of the anti smoking law throughout England and Wales.

Players will no longer be permitted to smoke at the same time marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public place will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most popular locations where many people enjoy smoking.

The effects of the smoking ban can already be looked at in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo parlors. Players have dropped and the business is literally fighting for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Of course they haven’t forgotten this familiar game?

The answer is on the net. Players know that they can bet on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a beverage and cigarette and still have a chance at monstrous jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.

Of course gambling on on the web is unlikely to replace the collective portion of going down to the bingo hall, but for a group of people the governing edicts have left a good many bingo players with no option.
