Much has been stated in the papers recently regarding the bingo industry struggling because of the smoking ban in Britain. Conditions have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested huge tax breaks to help keep the businesses from going bankrupt. But will the net variation of this quintessential game offer a lifeline, or will it not compare to its real life equivalent?
Bingo is an established game normally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game lately had seen a recent increase in appeal with younger men and women opting to visit the bingo halls instead of the bars on a Saturday night. This is all about to be destroyed with the legislating of the anti smoking law all over UK.
No longer will enthusiasts be allowed to puff on cigarettes at the same time marking numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public location will no longer be permitted to allow smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most favored areas where players like to smoke.
The results of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already illegal in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plummeted and the business is beyond a doubt struggling for its life. But where have the players gone? Obviously they have not given up on this familiar game?
The answer is on the net. People realise that they can bet on bingo in front of their computer at the same time enjoying a beverage and fag and in the end, have a chance at big prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened almost perfectly with the anti cigarette law.
Of course betting on on the web is unlikely to replace the collective portion of going over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the law has left a good many bingo enthusiasts with little choice.
