Much has been stated in the papers not long ago concerning the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the anti smoking law in the United Kingdom. Things have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for massive tax breaks to help keep the industry alive. However can the internet adaptation of this quintessential game provide a lifeline, or might it in no way compare to its real life opposite?
Bingo is an familiar game normally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game of late had experienced a recent comeback in acceptance with younger men and women opting to visit the bingo parlors in place of the discos on a Saturday night. All this is about to change with the legislating of the smoking ban around Britain.
No longer will gamblers be allowed to puff on cigarettes whilst marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 all public locations will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlors, which are possibly the most favorite areas where people enjoy smoking.
The results of the smoking ban can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already banned in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plummeted and the industry is literally struggling for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Surely they have not abandoned this age old game?
The answer is on the web. People realize that they can bet on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a drink and cig and still enjoy monstrous prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself just about perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course gambling on online will never replace the social aspect of going down to the bingo hall, but for a group of players the governing edicts have left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with no option.
