Might the Cigarette Ban in Britain Take Bingo Players On to the Internet?

A lot has been talked in the press just a while ago about the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the cigarette ban in Britain. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for big tax breaks to assist in keeping the businesses alive. However does the online variation of this traditional game present a salvation, or will it in no way compare to its real life relative?

Bingo has been an established game historically played by the "blue haired" generation. However the game of late had witnessed a recent comeback in popularity with younger men and women deciding to go to the bingo halls instead of the discos on a weekend. This is all about to be reversed with the enacting of the smoking ban around Britain.

No more will enthusiasts be allowed to smoke whilst marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 every public place will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favored locations where folks enjoy smoking.

The effects of the cigarette ban can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already barred in the bingo halls. Profits have dropped and the industry is absolutely fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Of course they haven’t forgotten this age old game?

The answer is online. People realise that they can gamble on bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a drink and cig and still enjoy massive jackpots. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.

Of course playing on the web is unlikely to replace the social aspect of going down to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of people the rules have left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with no alternative.
